What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration, with over 3 million tests taken in the last year.

More than 10,000 organizations globally trust IELTS, so when you take the assessment you can be confident that it is recognized by educational institutions, employers, governments and professional bodies around the world.

IELTS is accepted as evidence of English language proficiency for study, work and migration in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK, as well as for study and work in the USA.

Which test is right for me?

Most people will take the IELTS Academic test to support their study and application to study overseas - but it is important to check the entry requirements of individual organizations before choosing your test.

Students can nominate up to five organizations to which their IELTS test results will be sent automatically and free of charge. There is a fee for sending results to additional organizations. You can request your centre to send your results as long as your IELTS scores are valid.

      • IELTS Academic
The IELTS Academic test is suitable for entry to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, and also for professional registration purposes. It assesses whether you are ready to begin studying or training in an environment where English language is used, and reflects some of the features of language used in academic study.

      • IELTS General Training This IELTS test is suitable for those applying to train or study at below degree level, as well as those wishing to migrate to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. The test focuses on basic survival skills in broad social and workplace contexts.       • Computer-delivered IELTS (CD IELTS)

Introducing IELTS Academic and General Training testing on computer more widely, to provide more options to our test takers and stakeholders, while retaining all of the test’s current security, trust and integrity. With computer-delivered IELTS there are more test dates available, test takers can choose IELTS at a time convenient for them, and they will receive their results in 5 to 7 days. The Test Report Form, content, timing and structure of the test is the same whether you take the test on paper or on computer and the Speaking test is always face-to-face with a certified IELTS Examiner.

If you choose to take computer-delivered IELTS, you will take the Listening, Reading and Writing test using a computer. All aspects of the test are identical to paper-based IELTS, including:
  • Question types
  • Content
  • Timings*
  • Marking

How IELTS is scored?

IELTS results are reported on a 9-band scale
IELTS results are designed to be simple and easy to understand. They are reported as band scores on a scale from 1 (the lowest) to 9 (the highest).

Band score Skill level Description
9 Expert user The test taker has fully operational command of the language. Their use of English is appropriate, accurate and fluent, and shows complete understanding
8 Very good user The test taker has fully operational command of the language with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies and inappropriate usage. They may misunderstand some things in unfamiliar situations. They handle complex and detailed argumentation well.
7 Good user The test taker has operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings in some situations. They generally handle complex language well and understand detailed reasoning.
6 Competent user The test taker has an effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings. They can use and understand fairly complex language, particularly in familiar situations.
5 Modest user The test taker has a partial command of the language and copes with overall meaning in most situations, although they are likely to make many mistakes. They should be able to handle basic communication in their own field.
4 Limited user The test taker's basic competence is limited to familiar situations. They frequently show problems in understanding and expression. They are not able to use complex language
3 Extremely limited user The test taker conveys and understands only general meaning in very familiar situations. There are frequent breakdowns in communication.
2 Intermittent user The test taker has great difficulty understanding spoken and written English.
1 Non-user The test taker has no ability to use the language except a few isolated words.
0 Did not attempt the test The test taker did not answer the questions.

Calculating the overall band score
A score is given for each test component – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. These individual scores are then averaged and rounded to produce an overall band score.

IELTS results validity
While it is up to each organization to set a validity period that works for their purposes, the IELTS partners recommend a 2-year validity period for IELTS test results based upon the well-documented phenomenon of second language loss or 'attrition’.

Exam Frequency:
The IELTS examination is held four times in a month. The individual module's Band score is considered as per the requirement. The Band score obtained is valid up to two years. While obtaining admission to an educational institute, the latest IELTS score is considered.

Eligibility and Fees
IELTS is not recommended for candidates under the age of 16. In India, the fee is Rs.13, 250/- (Subject to revised)* payable at the time of registration.

Modes of Payment:
     • ICICI bank deposit(Direct)

Benefits of IELTS

     • You will get an objective assessment of your English language abilities. Maybe your friends have told you that you speak English well, or perhaps you always do well in quizzes at school. But do you really know your level? When you take an IELTS test, you will be measured against rigorous global IELTS standards.
     • You will get a certification that is widely recognised. By taking an IELTS test, you will receive a test report that is recognised and accepted by thousands of institutions around the world, including companies, universities, professional bodies, and government agencies.
     • You will improve your English language skills. Some students tend to favour certain skills over others. When you take an IELTS test, you are tested in all four skills, that is, Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, so you’ll need to practice them all if you want to do well.
     • You will gain a better knowledge of the English that you need. If you take the IELTS Academic test, you will become more familiar with the kind of language required for undergraduate or postgraduate study in English.
     • You will be motivated to study harder because you’ll have a clear goal. It’s very easy to put off studying for another day, if you don’t have clear aims and objectives. Taking an IELTS test gives you the motivation to study hard and improve your English.
